Looking for a way to breathe new life into your home? A pop of colour is an easy way to brighten rooms – and it can do the same for your mood on a grey day. Even better, it’s a low cost fix, perfect for post-Christmas bank balances.

Take a look at our 10 favourite ideas.

1) Paint a window frame

Most of us have white woodwork in our homes, but there’s really no need to leave it all in the same shade. Changing the colour of a window frame to something with standout isn’t a big commitment in terms of time or effort. Sand the frame first, then brush away the debris. Don’t forget to use masking tape to avoid getting paint on the glass.

2) Choose garden furniture

Tables and chairs designed for patios and terraces come in a host of eye-catching shades, but the garden’s not the only place to use them. A bold and beautiful side table will work a treat in the living room, for example, while a garden chair that shouts ‘look at me’ is ideal for the bathroom because it’ll stand up to the humidity of the room and bring personality to a clinical all-white scheme.

3) Go for a colourful window treatment

For a fashionable block of colour in an interior, hang shutters at the window. You can opt for DIY measure-and-fit options, so your new window dressing needn’t bust your budget. To add energy to a room, try a shade of orange or, if you’d love a dash of year-round sunshine whatever the actual weather’s doing, opt for yellow.

4) Brighten up a wall

Much simpler to apply than wallpaper, a sticker is an instant route to a colour pop. Think scale when you’re picking. This design works in conjunction with the storage unit below and brings interest to the top half of the wall. It’s a great focal point in a room that majors in white and wood tones.

5) Boost kitchen looks

The kitchen might be a hard-working room, but that’s no reason to neglect it in the decorative stakes: after all, we bet you spend a lot of time in there. So say goodbye to a boring splashback and opt for colour instead. This version is in glass, but you could get an equally attention-grabbing effect with glossy tiles.

6) Get a gorgeous staircase

Hallway and staircase the Cinderella of your interior because you treat it as a passing place? Give it some decorative love and you’ll reap the benefits every day when you come home. A new stair runner could add a burst of brilliance, but you don’t have to spend out on carpet. Floor paint means you can create your own design, and it’s hard wearing, too.

7) Make more of a radiator

Let’s face it, some radiators can be imposing for all the wrong reasons. You could invest in a stylish new model, but give a plain panelled design a makeover with colour, and it can be a star of your scheme and look – as well as feel – warm. When you’re painting, turn the radiator off and let it go cold before you start. Make sure you clean it as well, so there’s no grease or dust.

8) Refresh furniture

There’s no rule that says the finish of every piece of cabinet furniture in your room scheme has to be the same. You can create a style-confident look by introducing your pop of colour on just one piece. It can be an especially good remedy for designs you might have inherited from elsewhere in the family, giving them a whole new lease of life.

9) Wake up windows

Here’s another easy remedy for colour-starved room schemes. Window film is oh-so simple to apply and can bring colour that pops to your space. It’s also, of course, a fantastic way to stop the curious looking in.

10) Revive the floor

Searching for a speedy answer to nothing-but-neutral room schemes? Use the floor area to add a colour pop and roll out a rug featuring a shade you can’t ignore. Graphic patterns are still bang on trend if you want to give your room a modern twist.
