DIY Wood and Yarn Monogram Wall Hangings

DIY Wood and Yarn Monogram Wall Hangings -- great for decorating a child's room!

Hello Remodelaholic readers! Colleen here from Lemon Thistle, home to DIY, home decor, printables, and parties. We have been busy planning our twins’ bedroom makeover to turn their unfinished nursery into a ‘big kid’ room for them. While we have a long list of big DIYs (read: we need to bust out the power tools and get their mattresses off the floor!), I have an equally long list of small DIYs that I’m enjoying creating for the transformation. These Wood and Yarn Monogram Wall Hangings were the first to get crossed off the list (woohoo!) and while there’s still a long way to go before the room will be ready, I’m celebrating the small victories.

I’m such a fan of the yarn wall hangings trend right now and even though I don’t have the skills (or patience!) to craft a weaving, I thought I’d give the treatment to some wooden letters. I was totally inspired by these wooden letters from The Land of Nod, so thought I’d add some wood burned details on the upper half of the letters. The emerald green color is what they will have as comforters, but I have found it near impossible to find decor that incorporates that color! These wall hangings solved the dilemma.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own DIY Wood and Yarn Monogram Wall Hangings:

  • Wooden Letters (found in the wood section of a craft store)
  • Wood Burner
  • Yarn
  • Scissors

Start by picking out your wooden letters. I looked at a lot of wooden letters before settling on these ones. The less curved edges, the better. I wanted them to have a modern look so avoided any decorative detail on the letters. Next, hold them up on your wall and decide how long you would like your yarn to hang. Cut a piece of yarn double that length (plus a little room for error) and use that as your guide piece to cut a bunch of strands to length. Attach them to your letter by folding the yarn in half, and looping the ends through as shown.

Keep doing this until the bottom edge of your letter is as full as you like it. You can choose to color block the yarn as I did, or go with all one color. If you wanted to get really fancy, you could even try some macrame or weaving. Just make sure that you loop all the pieces on in the same direction so your knots are all on either the front or the back, not a mess of both. When your yarn is all attached, you can cut it to length. I chose to cut one of the hangings to a point and the other on an angle, but you could do straight across or leave them at random lengths for a more organic look. When you’re happy with how the yarn looks, it’s time to add some woodburned detail!

Allow your woodburner to completely heat up before starting. I chose to add a scalloped design to my little girl’s monogram and an arrow design to my sweet boy’s. You could choose dots, stripes, hearts- whatever! The key to woodburning is to apply an even, light pressure to avoid divits or light spots. You can find more woodburning tips in this DIY video.

When you’re done, you’re ready for hanging! I’m so in love with the character these add to their bedroom. I really like that they’re long enough to bridge the two-tone wall colors but not so big that they take over the wall. When we have their beds all done, I’m thinking these will go over their nightstands- one each. These will be replacing their current felt wall hangings, although I’m hoping to find another spot in the house for those! So tell me, are you taken with the yarn wall hanging trend? How about custom or monogrammed wall decor? I would love to see a massive letter done in an entry way or dining room. Anyone know where to find letters that big?
