9 ways that you know it’s time for a new carpet

Sometimes it’s easy to forget the soft stuff underneath your feet, especially as a good carpet can last for years and years. If you’ve got carpet in your home, you probably take it for granted; giving it the quick once over with the vacuum cleaner and every now and then a full shampoo as a special treat. If, however, you can relate to any of these, then it might be time to update your poor old carpet.

1. You’ve forgotten what colour your carpet was originally

Most modern carpets come with smart colour-fast fibres and fade-resistant coatings, helping keep the colour vibrant over time. If you’ve had your carpet a long while, though, it’s likely that these don’t apply. If what you remember as being a bright ruby claret is now a sad brown, it might be time for an upgrade.

2. You can see the underlay in certain areas

If your shag pile carpet is looking, well, not quite so shaggy (or, even worse, there are certain places where you can see the underlay peeking through) your carpet is really not doing its job. Not only will it be a trip hazard, it won’t be insulating your room as well as it used to, letting out heat and increasing your bills.

3. You keep tripping over those annoying stringy bits by the door

Wear and tear is just one of those things and over time even the toughest carpet will start to show some signs of strain. Regular vacuuming can help keep the pile looking springy, but eventually heavy traffic will win the war. If you’ve got to the point where your carpet is a trip hazard then it’s time to pick up some samples!

4. You’ve redecorated

A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for a room, but it will also highlight your tired old carpet like a beacon. If you’ve gone to the effort of redecorating, why not carry this new look through the room by replacing the flooring with something bright and modern that matches your new colour scheme perfectly?

5. Stains, so many stains!

Your carpet has been the victim of busy family life; there are so many stains, and no amount of vinegar, stain-away or fairy dust will get rid of them. If that’s the case, investing in a stain resistant carpet will mean you’ll have a smart new floor and peace of mind on top. Many modern carpets even offer lifetime stain free guarantees.

6. The children have left home

No more spills and muddy trainers! No chance of sneaky house parties full of messy teenagers while your back is turned! Finally your house is yours again and will remain pristine for longer; so rip up that old floor covering and finally have the luxurious carpet that you’ve always wanted!

7. You’re sneezing, a lot

Carpets harbour dust and although regular vacuuming will pick up most dirt, it won’t rid your house of dust mites. Older carpets catch and retain more allergens, so if your eyes are itchy and your nose is running, it might be time for a change. If you find you suffer a lot from allergies then hard flooring such as laminate, vinyl or wood might be a better solution for you.

8. You’ve had it… you can’t remember how many years

A good quality carpet will last you many years but, let’s face it, eventually even the best carpets will come to the end of their lifespan. If your carpet is looking wrinkled or matted and has lost all its padding then it’s definitely time to retire it.

Many modern carpets come with impressive warranties, usually upwards of 10 years; so update that delightful 1970s motif in your living room with a sleek and contemporary design and you’ll be set for the next few decades at least.

9. Moving house

Yes you’re not going to be around to enjoy the new carpet, but if your flooring is showing its age then replacing it with a smart new model will do wonders for your prospects. Not only will it encourage a quick sell by installing a fresh, modern look, new carpet can even add value to your property.

Your house will sell faster, and for a better price; as on average a new carpet can bring around a 50 percent return on investment, according to thisismoney.co.uk.
