Aren’t they beautiful? I love how each space feels nautical, but none of them are ‘theme’ rooms, ya know? It’s so much more inviting and cozy that way. They also all incorporate texture and a bit of rustic charm in just the right dose. With all that inspiration in mind, I came up with my own teen boy space:

For my space, I really wanted to keep in mind that this is a room for a boy in between a grown up and a little kid. I wanted to mix in elements of both, keeping it fun, but certainly not childish. Here are some things to keep in mind if you’re looking to pull off a similar style:
• Be bold, but not loud. By this I mean, that in this room, I definitely wanted it to read nautical, but not annoyingly so. To make sure it came across in the right dose, I incorporated some elements, like the two large framed ship paintings or the anchor pillow, that are unmistakably and literally ocean themed. However for most other elements in the room, I stuck to pieces that were more subtle. I looked for items that are reminiscent of what you might expect to find in a beach house, or on an old ship (like a mirror wrapped in rope, that also resembles a porthole).
• Mix neutrals with deep rich color. I feel like one of the biggest keys to pulling off this look is the color palette. It’s hard to pull off nautical without blue and red in the mix, but a lot of more childish nautical spaces tend toward bright, vivid reds and blues. To keep things a little more mature, I stuck with various neutral shades— creams, tans, golds, and browns, and mixed in deep, slightly muted colors. The more toned down color palette has a slightly worn, faded-over-time look to it. I collected pieces that make me picture a ships cabin or a weathered seaside cottage. One of my favorites is that side table that looks like it was carved out of driftwood!
• Keep things masculine, but fun. This is another tricky mix. To get the right balance, I used several rustic pieces with dark metal elements (like the light fixture, desk, lamp, and stool), and mixed those very masculine pieces with a few more fun ones (like the colorful pendants, the variety of pillows, and the anchor artwork). It’s all about balance!
